Kew accepts Reynoutria japonica as a rhizomatous perennial. University of Maryland Extension records the cream-marbled “Variegata” horticultural form. A variegated trade label does not establish the precise identity of every nursery specimen or make it non-spreading.

Light and water

The species prefers bright exposure and tolerates some shade. Grow in a manageable pot with well-drained medium. Check the actual medium, season and container before watering; do not use a fixed day count. Above-ground stems may die back in winter and regrow later.

Rhizome management

The species can regrow from underground rhizomes and fragments and is invasive in parts of the United States. Check that rhizomes are not escaping the container. Collect trimmings and old medium; do not discard rhizomes in natural areas or drains. This is practical containment advice, not a claim about Hong Kong legal status.
