Monstera obliqua Peru

Monstera obliqua Peru — this is the holy grail. The plant people refer to when they say “more hole than leaf.” The fenestrations on Monstera obliqua are so extreme, so impossibly delicate, that seeing one in person stops you in your tracks.

Native to Peru and parts of South America, M. obliqua is genuinely one of the rarest aroids in cultivation — far rarer than its common cousin M. adansonii (which is frequently and incorrectly sold as obliqua). True obliqua grows slowly and deliberately, each new leaf a tiny masterpiece of botanical lace. With the right conditions — warmth, high humidity, bright indirect light — it rewards patience with some of the most astonishing foliage in the plant kingdom. A serious collector’s piece.

Care Guide

• Light: Bright indirect light only. No direct sun — the delicate leaf tissue is vulnerable to sunburn, and on a plant this rare, that matters.
• Watering: Keep the mix evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top 2–3cm feels dry. Consistency matters more than volume.
• Humidity: 70–80%+ strongly recommended. A humidity tent, cabinet, or dedicated humidifier makes a real difference to growth rate and leaf health.
• Temperature: 20–30°C (68–86°F). This is a warm rainforest native — don’t let it drop below 16°C.
• Soil: Light and airy — sphagnum moss, orchid bark, and perlite. Never heavy potting soil alone.
• Support: Provide a moss pole — obliqua is a climber and produces larger, more fenestrated leaves when it can climb upward.
