Anthurium Cutucuense

Anthurium cutucuense — straight from the cloud forests of Ecuador’s Cutucu mountain range, this velvet-leaf Anthurium belongs to a group of plants that collectors have been quietly obsessing over for good reason.

The leaves are broad, deeply textured, and covered in a velvety surface that catches light differently depending on the angle — at times a rich deep green, at others shifting toward a burnished, almost iridescent sheen. New leaves emerge as a striking olive or coppery tone before deepening into their full dark beauty. Unlike the ubiquitous flamingo Anthurium, this species is grown purely for its dramatic foliage. A genuinely rare find.

Care Guide

• Light: Bright to medium indirect light. Filtered cloud-forest light gives the best leaf colour. Avoid direct sun — it bleaches the velvety surface.
• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top inch dries out. Higher humidity reduces watering frequency.
• Humidity: 70–80%+ ideal. A humidifier or pebble tray will make a visible difference in leaf size and texture.
• Temperature: 18–27°C (65–80°F). Keep above 15°C at all times.
• Soil: Chunky, airy mix — orchid bark, perlite, and a little sphagnum moss. Good drainage is essential.
• Feeding: Balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. High-nitrogen formulas encourage lush leaf growth.
