Leaves naturally splashed with creamy yellow-green variegation, releasing a sweet peach scent when flowering — a mini "aromatic hanging plant" that turns an entire room gentle with just one small pot by the window.

Origin & characteristics

Native to the Philippines and other Southeast Asian tropical regions, this Apocynaceae species is a perennial evergreen climbing vine. This variegated form of Hoya heuschkeliana has oval, thick succulent leaves marked with irregular creamy-yellow to white patterning, especially pronounced on new growth. Growth is slow and compact, with vines that stay manageable rather than sprawling, making it perfect for hanging in small indoor spaces or displaying on a shelf. It flowers mainly in spring and summer, producing small pale yellow to pink star-shaped blooms in clusters that release an intense sweet peach fragrance. The entire plant is non-toxic, safe for pets and children.

Light

  • Ideal placement: an east- or north-facing windowsill, receiving gentle indirect light
  • Adaptable range: works in anything from bright indirect light to half-day sun
  • Protecting variegation: as a centrally-variegated cultivar, avoid harsh direct sun — overly strong light scorches the variegated portions brown, or even kills them off entirely
  • Signs of insufficient light: new leaves come in fully green, internodes stretch out, flowering decreases or stops
  • Tip: a spot behind a sheer curtain, or 1–2 metres from a window, is ideal

Watering

  • Principle: "water when just dry" — let the top 2–3 cm of soil dry out before watering
  • Seasonal frequency:
  • Spring/summer (growing season): roughly every 7–10 days
  • Autumn/winter (semi-dormant): roughly every 10–14 days, keeping the soil slightly dry
  • Method: water slowly around the rim until it drains from the base, emptying the saucer after 30 minutes
  • Succulent leaf warning: the thick leaves store water well — better a bit dry than overwatered, since root rot is very hard to reverse

Soil & pot

  • Soil recipe: prioritise a loose, breathable mix — try cactus soil mixed with perlite (roughly 7:3), or a custom blend:
  • 40% peat soil + 30% perlite + 20% bark chips + 10% coco coir
  • pH: slightly acidic (pH 6.0–6.5) is ideal
  • Pot choice:
  • Must have drainage holes; plastic or terracotta both work
  • Terracotta offers better breathability and lower root rot risk
  • Choose a pot just large enough for the root system — an oversized pot retains too much water

Temperature & humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 18–28°C
  • Minimum tolerance: around 10°C; growth stalls and leaves soften below this
  • Humidity requirement: 40–60% is enough — typical Hong Kong indoor conditions suit it well
  • Flowering tip: a 3–5°C day-night temperature differential (e.g. 25°C by day, 20°C at night) helps trigger blooming
  • Winter protection: keep away from direct AC airflow, and reduce watering once temperatures drop below 15°C

How to explain to customers

"What's great about this variegated heuschkeliana Hoya is the natural creamy yellow-green variegation on its leaves — hang it near a window and the sunlight makes it look absolutely gentle and lovely. When it flowers, you get an intense peach fragrance that fills the whole room. Just remember not to put it under harsh direct sun, since the variegated parts scorch easily. Water only when the soil is dry — the thick leaves store water well, so better a bit dry than too wet. It's non-toxic, so cats, dogs, and kids are all safe around it."

Fun facts

  • Although the flowers are tiny, their fragrance is intensely strong — in the wild, they use scent to attract nocturnal pollinating insects like moths.
  • The genus name Hoya honours British horticulturist Thomas Hoy, who served as head gardener at London's Chelsea Physic Garden in the late 18th century.
  • "Central variegation" (variegata) differs from "marginal variegation" (marginata) — central variegation appears in the middle of the leaf, while marginal variegation appears at the edges, and both looks have their devoted fans.
