Origin & characteristics
'Michelin' is a horticultural hybrid within the genus Echeveria (Crassulaceae), bred by Korean grower Changhee and one of the most popular Korean-bred succulents in recent years. As a garden hybrid, its full parentage is generally undisclosed. The plant forms a classic rosette, with thick, tightly overlapping leaves ranging from pale green to powdery blue; under stress colouring, the leaf margins and tips flush a captivating pink to orange-red, resembling a miniature rose. It stays compact, reaching roughly 8-12 cm across at maturity, making it perfect for a windowsill, desk, or mixed succulent arrangement.
Light
- Plenty of sun: at least 4-6 hours of bright direct or strong indirect light daily
- The secret to good colour: ample sunlight combined with a moderate day-night temperature swing (over 10°C) brings out the best leaf colour
- Summer shading: shade from harsh midday sun with mesh netting to prevent scorching and black spots
- Indoors: a south-facing windowsill is ideal; insufficient light causes leaves to thin, stretch, and lose their colour, turning plain green
Watering
- Wait until bone dry: let the soil dry out completely before watering — "better dry than wet" is the golden rule for succulents
- Spring/summer growing season: roughly every 7-10 days, adjusted for ambient humidity
- Autumn/winter dormancy: extend to every 14-21 days, or even less
- Method: water slowly around the rim, avoiding water pooling in the rosette centre, which can cause crown rot
- Golden rule: when in doubt, don't water — succulents would rather be a little too dry than too wet
Soil & pot
- Soil: a dedicated succulent mix or a custom blend of peat soil : coarse sand : perlite : volcanic rock (麥飯石) = 2:3:3:2
- Grit ratio: aim for 60-70% mineral/grit content to ensure extremely fast drainage
- Pot: a wide, shallow pot works best — terracotta or cement pots offer the best breathability
- Drainage holes: essential — never choose a pot without a drainage hole
- Repotting: once a year in spring, a good opportunity to check root health at the same time
Temperature & humidity
- Ideal temperature: 15-25°C, growing most vigorously in spring and autumn
- Summer management: above 30°C it enters semi-dormancy — reduce watering and increase airflow
- Minimum temperature: no lower than 5°C — frost causes leaves to turn translucent and rot
- Humidity: prefers a dry environment — excess humidity easily leads to root rot, so good ventilation is essential
- Outdoor care: during Hong Kong's humid spring/summer rainy season, it's best to bring the plant indoors or under a rain shelter
Common problems
| Issue | Cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves thinning and stretching (etiolation) | Severely insufficient light | Gradually increase light exposure; stretched sections can be beheaded and propagated |
| Lower leaves turning mushy | Overwatering or poor airflow | Stop watering immediately, check roots, repot with fresh soil if needed |
| Black spots on leaf surface | Sunburn or fungal infection | Improve airflow, shade from strong light, apply fungicide if severe |
| Colour fading back to green | Insufficient light or too little day-night temperature swing | Increase sun exposure — autumn/winter's natural temperature swings bring out colour most easily |
| Roots dried out, plant wobbly | Prolonged severe drought | Use the soak method to rehydrate, then resume normal watering frequency |
How to explain to customers
"'Michelin' is a beautiful Korean-bred succulent — it genuinely looks like a miniature rose, and when it's well cared for, the leaf edges turn a lovely pink. The most important thing is plenty of sunlight, so a windowsill is the perfect spot. For watering, you really need to hold back — only water once the soil is completely dry, and it's fine to err on the dry side. If you want good colour, you'll need a day-night temperature difference, which naturally happens in autumn and winter. Just remember not to overwater — root rot is the number one cause of death for succulents."
Fun facts
The genus name Echeveria honours the 18th-century Mexican botanical illustrator Atanasio Echeverría y Godoy, who produced a vast body of exquisite botanical illustrations of Mexican plants. Echeveria species are mainly distributed across the arid regions of Central and South America, where they evolved thick, fleshy leaves to store water. As a Korean hybrid, 'Michelin' inherits the classic tight rosette form of Echeveria while offering richer colour development, making it one of the "must-have" cultivars in recent succulent collecting circles. Korean succulent breeding techniques are among the most advanced in the world, and cultivars are often named after their breeders — the Changhee lineage is one of the best known.
