Kalanchoe orgyalis Baker

Not every standout plant announces itself with flowers. Kalanchoe orgyalis — known as the “Copper Spoons” plant — earns its place in any collection through pure textural drama. The spoon-shaped leaves are heavily felted: young growth and upper surfaces carry a warm, burnished copper-bronze that gradually matures to silver, while the undersides are a soft, velvety silver-white throughout. In bright light the whole plant practically glows, like something cast in warm metal rather than grown from soil.

Native to Madagascar, it has evolved for full sun, dry conditions, and benign neglect — a refreshing quality in a houseplant world that so often rewards anxious hovering. Give it the brightest spot in your home, almost forget to water it, and it will reward you with consistent architectural beauty and occasional clusters of small yellow flowers in season.

Care Guide

• Light: Full sun to very bright indirect light. The more sun, the richer the copper tones. This plant actively wants your sunniest window.
• Watering: Very infrequent — allow soil to dry completely between waterings. In cooler months, water sparingly (once a month is often enough). Root rot is the only real risk.
• Humidity: Low to average humidity is fine. Do not mist — the felted leaves trap moisture and are prone to rot if wetted.
• Temperature: 18–30°C. Tolerates brief cooler periods but protect from frost.
• Soil: Cactus or succulent mix with extra grit. Excellent drainage is non-negotiable.
• Flowering: Produces clusters of small yellow flowers, typically in late winter to spring with sufficient sun.
