Origin & characteristics

Philodendron 'Splendid' is an extremely popular horticultural hybrid, with parent species Philodendron verrucosum (velvety Philodendron) × Philodendron melanochrysum (Black Gold Philodendron), perfectly combining the strengths of both. It's an epiphytic climbing Philodendron, with the plain species distributed across the tropical rainforest of Central and South America.

Cultivar characteristics:

• Leaf texture: juvenile leaves have a velvety texture, remaining soft and thick even as they mature, with an excellent tactile quality
• Leaf shape: large heart-shaped to long-oval, with an elegantly elongated leaf tip; mature leaves reach 40-60 cm
• Leaf colour: deep emerald-green on top with golden or pale green veins; underside is purple-red to deep red, creating a striking contrast between the two sides
• Climbing habit: a climbing Philodendron requiring a moss pole or support for climbing, with leaves growing progressively larger as it climbs

Light

• Ideal light: bright indirect light, roughly 10,000-20,000 lux
• Best placement: near an east- or north-facing window; west- or south-facing windows need a sheer curtain or should be positioned 1-2 metres back

Common problems

Leaves becoming small and dull

→ Usually caused by insufficient light. Move to a brighter position, or consider adding a grow light.

Leaf edges or tips turning yellow

→ Possibly overwatering causing root rot, or environment too dry. Check soil moisture and adjust watering frequency.

Leaves drooping and going soft

→ A sign of underwatering. Water thoroughly right away, and it should recover within 24 hours. If it doesn't improve, check root health.

New leaves unfurling incompletely or tearing

→ Humidity too low or inconsistent water supply. Increase environmental humidity, ensure regular watering.

Purple-red leaf underside fading
