Origin & characteristics

Philodendron plowmanii is native to the tropical rainforest of Ecuador to Peru in South America, at 1,000-2,500 metres elevation. It was formally described and named by renowned botanist Thomas Croat in 2008, with the species epithet plowmanii honouring American botanist Timothy Plowman.

Its typical features are large, thick, heart-shaped to long-oval leaves, growing up to 50-70 cm. The leaf surface has a distinctly textured feel, mature leaves are deep green with a sheen, and the veins are deeply sunken into the leaf, creating a unique pattern. New leaves emerge reddish-brown or pale green, gradually deepening. Leaf edges have a slight wavy ripple, and the texture is thick like leather.

The stem is thick with well-developed aerial roots, and its growth habit sits between terrestrial and climbing, mostly creeping along the ground or clinging to tree trunks in the wild. Compared to other Philodendron species, plowmanii is highly adaptable and grows steadily, making it a great entry point into advanced Philodendron collecting.

Light

• Ideal light: medium to bright indirect light (800-1,500 lux); an east-facing window, north-facing window, or 2 metres from a south-facing window all work
• Acceptable range: grows well in semi-shade, one of the more shade-tolerant Philodendron species
• Avoid: intense midday direct sun in summer will scorch leaves; prolonged darkness causes stretched internodes and narrower leaves
• Tip: with ample light, veins become more pronounced and leaf colour more lushly green with a sheen

Watering

• Frequency: water once the top 2-3 cm of soil dries out, typically every 5-7 days in summer, every 10-14 days in winter
• Method: water slowly and thoroughly around the rim until a little water appears at the base, empty tray runoff after half an hour
• Water quality: room-temperature tap water is fine, not sensitive to water quality
• Note: the robust root system has some drought tolerance — favour dryness over wetness; soil dries slowly in winter, so extend the watering interval
• How to check: insert a finger to the second knuckle in the soil and feel for dryness before watering

• A dedicated Araceae potting mix with good drainage is recommended

Normal — plowmanii new leaves are typically reddish-brown or pale green, gradually deepening to green after unfurling. No need to worry.

Q: Are the deeply sunken veins a sign of underwatering?

This is a species characteristic — plowmanii's veins are naturally sunken, creating a distinctive texture, not a sign of underwatering.

Q: Internodes are stretching and leaves getting smaller?

Insufficient light — move to a brighter position, or consider adding a grow light.

Q: Aerial roots growing everywhere?

A sign of health! You can guide aerial roots into a moss pole, or mist them to keep moist and aid absorption.

Q: Can it be propagated?

There's a story behind the name Philodendron plowmanii — Timothy Plowman was a renowned American botanist who specialised in South American economic plants and the origins of cacao (Theobroma cacao), but he passed away young at just 45. Thomas Croat named this Philodendron plowmanii to honour his contributions to South American botany. This cultivar only began entering the horticultural market at scale in the late 2010s, having previously existed almost exclusively in herbarium collections.
