Hoya callistophylla ssp. long leaf

Hoya callistophylla ssp. longifolia — the name translates as “beautiful leaf,” and once you see the venation on this plant, you’ll understand immediately. Each elongated leaf is traced with a network of deeply impressed parallel veins that catch every angle of light differently — bold and intricate, like a topographic map of some imagined landscape.

Native to Borneo and parts of Southeast Asia, callistophylla is grown primarily for its extraordinary foliage — the flowers, when they appear, are small and star-shaped, but honest collectors will admit the leaves are the real attraction. The long-leaf subspecies has a particularly dramatic, narrow form that makes it instantly recognisable among dozens of Hoya species. It trails beautifully in a hanging basket, or climbs a trellis where the full length of each leaf can be properly appreciated.
