The leaves are large, glossy, and asymmetrical in the way only Begonias can be — that perfectly lopsided beauty that looks like nature made a mistake and then realised it was actually better this way.
Unlike the mass-market Begonias that crowd every garden centre, lubbergai is a rhizomatous species with real botanical character. It grows with a low, spreading habit, pushing out new leaves from a creeping rhizome with meditative patience. Give it the right conditions — bright indirect light, the right watering rhythm — and it fills a wide pot with overlapping, lustrous foliage that rewards every glance. A choice plant for those who appreciate Begonias beyond the obvious.

Care Guide
- Light: Bright indirect light to gentle shade. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the leaves. North or east-facing windows work well.
- Watering: Allow the top 2–3cm to dry before watering. Rhizomatous Begonias are more drought-tolerant than cane types — overwatering causes rhizome rot. Water at the base, not over the leaves.
- Humidity: 50–70%. Appreciates humidity, but good airflow is equally important — stagnant humid air can cause powdery mildew.
- Temperature: 16–27°C (60–80°F). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 12°C.
- Soil: Light, well-draining mix with perlite. Never sit in water — the shallow rhizome is sensitive to rot.
- Repotting: Prefers wide, shallow pots — the rhizome spreads horizontally. Repot in spring when roots emerge from drainage holes.
