Plant and cultivation
Kew accepts Reynoutria japonica as the species name. University of Maryland Extension records “Variegata” as a cultivated form with cream-marbled leaves. This listing retains the supplier label; the cultivar identity of each stock plant has not been independently verified. Grow in a bright to partly shaded position in a draining container. Check the actual medium before watering rather than using a fixed schedule. The above-ground stems may die back in winter and regrow.
Containment: The species spreads by underground rhizomes and can regrow from fragments. Keep it in a manageable pot, check for escaping roots, and collect cuttings and old medium. Do not discard rhizomes in natural areas or drains. Variegation is not evidence that the plant cannot spread. This is cultivation guidance, not a statement of Hong Kong legal status.
